The Fearless Gaul warrior Astérix and his adventures across the world are being made available for the first time in Hindi. The project has been undertaken by Om Books International (OBI), one of India’s leading trade publishers. Recently, it published the first album Astérix, Le Gaulois—Gaulwasi Astérix —in Hindi.
The Adventures of Asterix is one of the most popular French comics in the world, already translated into over 100 languages. Originally written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Alberto Aleandro Uderzo, the series is being translated in Hindi by Puneet Gupta, an advertising professional and the translator of Tintin in Hindi, and Dipa Chaudhuri, a publishing professional with an M.Phil in French Literature from Université Paris Diderot-Paris 7.
Ajay Mago, Publisher, Om Books International says ” In my childhood, Asterix enjoyed the pride of place next to the leading international and Indian comic characters on the bookshelves at home, and in most households and libraries that I was aware of. I was determined to see Asterix and his changing constellation in each adventure enter the world of Hindi. They have finally done so with the first album. And while we waited for the Hindi translation rights to be granted to us by Hachette Livre, France, we have already translated the entire series of Tintin in Hindi. That makes two of the biggest brands in the world of comics to be translated by OBI.”
